Many will hear the term ADA and associate it with The American Dental Association. The ADA that I am referring to is * The Americans With Disabilities Act*, signed into law on July 26, 1990, by President George H.W. Bush.

The ADA prohibits discrimination in employment, services, state programs, government programs, and state and government: public accommodations, commercial facilities, transportation, and telecommunications. The ADA also applies to the United States Congress.

1 in 5 people in the United States has a medical condition/diagnoses that meets the ADA definition of disability: person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, a person who has a history or record of such an impairment, or a person who is perceived by others as having such an impairment. Please note- both physical and invisible disabilities are protected under ADA.

The ADA has 5 titles:

Title I - Employment

Title II - State and Local Government

Title III- Public Accommodations

Title IV- Telecommunications

Title V- Misc. Provisions

1 in 5 people means that the person needing this information is you, and/or someone you know. It is beyond important that people with disabilities have this information. ADA provides protections that so many don’t know about. The PowerPoint video below is an introduction to the ADA in all aspects of life.
