Leaving Home for The Road- How I Enjoyed My Plant-based Diet on The Road
A few months ago, I wrote a piece on Leaving Home for the Road- My Preparation for Cross Country Travel , where I discussed my preparation for life on the road! Not discussed in that piece was the actual journey as someone that doesn’t consume the typical diet. Many wondered how I survived; however, it’s not as hard as one may think. This is especially true for a creative.
I left Ohio in the summer of 2018. I didn’t have a plan for everything, but I had a plan for food and when plans failed (because isn’t that the beauty of life?), I latched on to my creativity. One thing about me- I’m a foodie. I love to eat so I will make a way!
I expected a challenge in certain parts of the country. Many areas aren’t as plant-based/ vegan friendly as others (but that should totally change- it’s 2019!) and that means, lack of options. Knowing that in advance of leaving, I wanted to be as prepared as possible.
Planning, Research, and Vegan Restaurants
I searched in advance for restaurants in the area that I was visiting; vegan restaurants and restaurants with vegan options. I definitely had an “eat” portion of my journey (referencing the amazing Eat, Pray, Love- the book and the movie).
