Righting the Wrongs- Plain Jane, Cannabis Activists and Advocates
“I’d love to see weed legalized but not unless the government can come up with a way to right their wrongs with true reparations.”- Lindsey Holthaus, Plain Jane, CEO
The United States has spent $1 trillion on the war on drugs and due to this war, thousands of lives have been taken and negatively impacted.
In the U.S, the Drug Policy Alliance estimates $51 billion in annual spending toward war on drugs initiatives.
Global war on drugs costs are estimated at more than $100 billion per year.
Though legalization efforts have made amazing strides, so much work is still needed to fix the many wrongs from the past and present. Even with legality, there are still numerous arrests, and way too many issues tied to race and cannabis:
- In America, someone is arrested every 25 seconds for drug possession.
- Black people with no history of criminal convictions have been three times more likely to be arrested by Toronto police for possession of small amounts of marijuana than white people.
- Georgia used $78.6M of their budget to incarcerate people of color for drug offenses- 1.6 times more than the state’s budget for substance use treatment services.
